Stoats and Ferrets
The stoat is a member of the mustelid family, along with weasels and ferrets. It was introduced to New Zealand late last century to control rabbits and hares.
Stoats are now considered "public enemy number one" for New Zealand birds.

Bunny time
Having recently returned from a 'round the world' trip. Deschia decided to hang out with us and re-acclimatise.
Deschia is holding a baby rabbit that Gibson caught and was slowly playing to death.
Thanks for bringing us a hammock from Thailand!

Waiting for Rabbits...
Gibson is currently out rabbit hunting....or more precisely, rabbit sitting. Lately he has been sitting in the middle of the paddock and staring into the bushes where he saw a rabbit about a week ago. I think he is just waiting for it to come back. He looks rather meditative, so I'm not sure if part way through he forgets what he's doing there in the middle of the paddock.

Wet from hunting
A Flying cat, a Nest Box, and a Rabbit Chase
Quite a while ago we put chicken wire along the bottom of the fence to keep the chooks from coming too close to the house. They are mostly contained to the back two paddocks. This chicken wire also makes it so that Gibson can't get through, unless he uses the style of course.

The First Rabbit
Gibson caught a rabbit today. And yes, he brought the dead rabbit inside through his window to proudly show it off. He threw it around on the floor for a while to be sure it was good and dead and meowed at me and purred excitedly about it...and looked oh so very proud of himself. Then he carried it in his teeth and set it down in the little corner by the fridge where we feed him. Then he looked up at me and meowed as if he expected me to cut it up for him.

Hares
These large rabbit like creatures are fast moving and hard to spot with their natural camouflage. Ideal for food as they are a pest, eating young trees.
The cat always enjoys a bit to fresh hare and, if I'm feeling particularly adventurous, I try cooking a bit too.
