Tree planting - May 2008
Our volunteer helpers came from Christchurch, Kaikoura and Wellington for a long weekend of tree planting. Seven energetic individuals armed with spades ready to plant a forest.
We started out with 100 Arizona Cypress, a disease and drought tolerant relative of the common Macrocarpa. These required added protection from rabbits and hares, a cut down recycled vine guard from the local grape industry and application of ‘liquid shotgun’ made from egg powder and paint.
The 50 Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) that Al brought down from Wellington with him were scattered around the edges where their eventual size and girth (think hundreds of years) will add an impressive permanence to the forest.
