New Dawn – A weekend of Linux

This weekend I set myself the challenge of migrating my work environment to Linux (again) after spending the last year or so working solely in windows. My first impressions were how much Linux desktop has matured over the past few years and how much the community around it has expanded.

After discussing with collages I settled on Ubuntu, a popular, easy to use desktop system based on the stability of Debian.  Not wanting to completely sever my windows connections I repartitioned my system into three sections:

  1. Windows:             4GB
  2. Data:                    30GB
  3. Linux:                   6GB

This ensured that I could still boot into windows and access my files while also ‘mounting’ my FAT32 data petition in Linux.

The whole process went very smoothly with my wireless network hardware the only thing not supported out of the box.

The built in package manager and application install / uninstall system is a huge improvement on the past need to compile your own software and with a huge array of software applications there is truly a solution for every need.

Take the plunge and install a different operating system. I chose to switch to Ubuntu (Linux) and was very impressed.
