Gravity fed shower

Check if the water is hot enough by touching the vertical pipe parallel to the hot water cylinder that runs from the fire into the cylinder. When the pipe feels hot all the way from the bottom to the top, then that means you have a full supply of hot water in the cylinder. Be careful when you touch the pipe because it can get VERY HOT...which means the water coming out of the tap will be very hot as well.

The light for the shower and toilet is the middle switch to the right of the back door.

Starting the shower
Turn on hot tap all the way and wait for hot water to travel through the pipe and start coming out of the shower head. If the water is steaming, do not touch it as the fire can make water very hot. Turn the cold tap on fully and then slowly adjust until the desired temperature is achieved.

Hot water for showering and dishes

WARNING – The fire can make the water VERY hot (boiling). Be careful when touching and mix with cold to achieve a desired temperature.

The water is heated by the fire. which can take about 2 hours. In the summer months it is also heated by a solar panel or a combination of fire and solar. The hot water can be used at the kitchen sink, the shower and the outdoor bath.

Be sure to check out the fire starting instructions or please ask us if you need help with starting the fire.

Before using hot water for shower or dishes, first check if the water is hot enough. You can do this by touching the vertical pipe parallel to the hot water cylinder that runs from the fire into the cylinder. When the pipe feels hot all the way from the bottom to the top, then that means you have a full supply of hot water in the cylinder. Be careful when you touch the pipe because it can get VERY HOT...which means the water coming out of the tap will be very hot as well.
Boiling - Steam bubbles in the pipes
If the water gets very hot you may hear steam escaping out the header pipe by the firewood.

Solar (Summer : December – February)
On clear, sunny days the solar panel located below the lookout platform can make the water hot enough for showering by around 6pm. If the day has been cooler or partly cloudy, you may need  to additionally heat the water by lighting the fire.

Back to basics - building the van 2

Well, if you were starting to think I might be getting bored of it you are wrong. I'm still loving it and working away full steam. Today I began working on some sound solutions for speakers but gave up when I realised I was on the wrong track.

Good king henry

Good king henry

Details   This is a small perennial herbaceous vegetable that was once well known in England and central/southern Europe. While it has naturalized in the U.S., it is a rather uncommon food there. Good King Henry is in the same family as spinach, and its leaves are used in much the same way; however, its shoots are eaten like asparagus, flower buds like broccoli, and the seeds are an edible grain. Add its ability to grow in the shade, and this is a great plant to add to your Edible Forest Garden or other Permaculture plantings.

Olmec, indigenous peoples of central America

Olmec, indigenous peoples of central America

People make all sorts of wild guesses about the origin of my name. I can count on one hand the number who have known correctly.

For those of you who are not sure, the Olmecs were a culture of ancient peoples inhabiting the East Mexico lowlands around 800 BC. They are often regarded as the Mother Culture of later Middle American civilizations and are famous for their colossal carved heads.

In a strange twist of fate, it turns out my wife, whose grandmother is Salvadorian, may have a trace of Olmec ancestry.
