Seasonal Pear Selection
Details
These fresh, organic summer pears are picked at the perfect stage—firm and ready to ripen to perfection. Because they’re harvested while still hard, they’ll need a few days to soften and reach their ideal sweetness.
How to Tell When a Pear is Ripe
- Colour: Pears change colour as they ripen. For example, Bartletts go from green to yellow, while Anjou remain mostly green. Red varieties become more vibrant.
- Texture: Gently press near the stem—if it gives slightly, it’s ripe. If it feels hard, it needs more time.
- Fragrance: A sweet smell near the stem means the pear is ripe.
- Neck Test: Gently press the neck of the pear. If it yields slightly, it’s ready to eat.
- Time: Pears ripen within a few days at room temperature. To speed up the process, place them in a paper bag with a banana or apple.
Once ripe, store in the fridge to keep them at their best.
