Trees and Tracks

After spending our Saturday assisting my parents with their garlic planting had Sunday free to continue improving the land.

The first task was to plant out a small number of seedling walnuts that Zaya had collected from her mother-in-law near Cheviot. The plants were about 20-30 cm tall and quite tapered with a big tap root and no leaves. We also planted 3 kowhai seedlings for variety.

The plan is to get this area closed off with netting next weekend to prevent any animals from getting in amongst the young trees.

With the impending delivery of some heavy building supplies by truck and trailer, I decided to tackle the tracks and attempt to widen them in a couple of places. An hour or so with a spade and an industrial grade blister later things were looking more passable.

Finally, with the day getting old, we laid out the line for the third fence. This is an internal line designed to enclose the area which will one day have the house and garden. The aim is to focus on the planting and development of this area in an effort to establish plants for scenery, shelter and food before attempting to live there.
